Heed this advice from a mosquito expert

If you make it a point to follow the goings-on in Broward County, you know that mosquitos are frequently a hot topic, especially since Zika has arrived in Florida. The good news is that the county is taking the threat of disease-carrying mosquitos seriously and is making efforts – like spraying – to reduce their populations.

It is also important for residents to be proactive when it comes to mosquitos, and there are things you can do right now to protect yourself. This is especially important for women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. To stay safe, Anh Ton, Director of Broward County’s Mosquito Control Section, has these three important “T” tactics to keep in min

1.Tip

Mosquitos love standing water because it provides the perfect spot for females to lay their eggs. If you have anything in your yard that can collect rain, be sure to go out on a regular basis and tip it over to get rid of the water.

2. Toss

If any of those items that collect water are unnecessary or unwanted, the best thing you can do is toss them out. It’s possible there are old tires or other things in your yard you are not even aware of, so take a good look at your entire property.

3. Treat

For water features or anything else you have that you want to keep, you can treat the water with larvicide. This will prevent mosquitos from using it for breeding purposes.

The best way to prevent mosquitos from bugging you

While all of these are good tips, there is something else you can do to keep mosquitos from attacking you, and it requires much less work on your part. When you install a misting system at your home, it will automatically release an insecticide to repel the pests. Once set up, the system works from a pre-programmed timer, so you will never have to worry about turning it on or off.

Disease-carrying mosquitos are scary, but with the right preemptive measures, you won’t have to deal with them at your house.
